Let’s face it, leaving the Sates and traveling abroad on a vacation can be a big step for some. If you’ve decided that you are ready to take the next step in your travels, Amsterdam is the best place for you to begin. I have put together my five best reasons for choosing Amsterdam as your first intercontinental trip.
- EASY TO GET THERE
Amsterdam is a major travel hub. There’s direct flights to Amsterdam from multiple cities and airlines from all over the world. From Schiphol Airport you can hop on the train to the heart of the city at Centraal Station. Taxi cabs are also easy to take from the airport, they will drop you off where ever you need to go.
- LANGUAGE BARRIER
There really is none. 98% of everyone we interacted with spoke English. Being in a foreign country can cause culture shock for some. For me this feeling is the reason I travel, for some it may be overwhelming. After all, Amsterdam is a foreign country and there will probably be a level of culture shock. The fact that almost everyone speaks English makes it so much easier to assimilate.
- THINGS TO DO
Home of world renowned museums like The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh and no shortage of Michelin Starred Restaurants, there are plenty of things to do in Amsterdam. If museums and fine dinning aren’t your thing no need to worry. You can pass the day away walking around the city and people watch. Rent a bicycle and do as the Dutch do or take a walk along the Amstel River and through the famed Red Light District, be sure to stop off at a coffee shop along the way.
If you want to get away with your significant other or are planning a honeymoon, once again Amsterdam delivers in every way. The waterways and canals are the reason they call Amsterdam the Venice of the north and it delivers in the same way. In the evenings sip on wine while on a romantic boat ride through the maze of canals. The beautiful buildings and bridges are sure to leave an impression for years to come. Be sure to kiss under the Magere Bruge (skinny bridge), legend has it that kissing on or under the bridge will ensure your love is everlasting.
- FRIENDLY PEOPLE
All though Amsterdam is a big city it somehow has a small town feel. The Dutch have always been friendly and hospitable towards us. Mostly everyone we spoke to went above and beyond to help us with directions or recommendations. Go to Dam Square to watch the city unfold, there was always someone eager to talk to you and answer any questions you may have about the city or just about anything!
